Welford Road Cemetery, Leicester was opened in 1849 and holds some 213,000 people in around 40,000 plots. For most of the Victorian period it was practically the only place that anyone could be buried in the city and can perhaps therefore claim to represent the history of Leicester during those years more completely than any artefact or building can. We have chosen nearly 200 of those buried in this beautiful space to tell that story, from the rich and famous to representatives of the common people who made the city that we know now.

You can use this app to explore these stories through pictures and text, share them to Facebook or Twitter, and save your favourites. With the map you can easily find their burial place within the cemetery.

We hope you find their stories interesting and that they spark an interest in finding out more about them and about Leicester.
